Least Forest Dragon

Draco sylvestris var. gracilis

This lovely creature has a bad name for raiding bird feeders - for the birds,of course, not the seeds or suet. Its reputation is perhaps partially deserved, but much of the damage to local songbird populations for which it is blamed is actually due to the irresponsible cat owners who allow their pets to run free. Our native dragons have co-existed with birds for thousands of years without upsetting the dynamic balance of the ecosystem.

D. sylvestris g.is remarkable for its delicate iridescence, which gives it the appearance of having the ability to change color. The color does vary from one individual to another from a deeper, bluish green to, in rare cases, a shimmering pale gold.

"Leasts" may be seen darting in short flights from tree to tree. They are almost never found outside of thickly forested areas. Fragmentation of habitat has reduced their numbers greatly in recent years.
